Long story short

Historical creatures experienced through breathtaking 3D models, illustrations, and AR.

Using the latest technology, we developed a website with interactive 3D and AR. Users can experience the thrill of paleontological reconstruction and discover creatures that have been extinct for millions of years.

We made this immersive prehistoric adventure accessible across devices, browsers, and platforms so anyone can discover the secrets of the ancient world.

A strip of the interactive timeline: reconstructed Triassic sea creatures floating above a coloured bar marking the Permian, Triassic and Jurassic periods.

Challenge & Solution

The intention behind this website was to showcase the talented artists who created the 3D models and illustrations. Since a seamless interface is crucial for enhancing user experience, we ensured it was easy to use.

Although displaying 3D animations online is challenging, we were able to develop software that runs smoothly without overburdening a user's device. Designed to be responsive and adaptable, the website is compatible with a wide range of devices, browsers, and platforms.

A laptop showing the Cretaceous scene — a mosasaur and a large armoured fish over a reef, with a labelled marker reading Protosphyraena — flanked by two more period scenes.

Making of

Constantly optimizing the abundant graphical content was an important part of this project. Another aspect was making the website fully adaptable and accessible. We also needed to construct the website's architecture with ease of maintenance and user-friendly content management in mind.

To tackle these key objectives, we began by forming of a crystal clear vision and strategy for the website's structure, aesthetic, and features. In the end, interacting with the 3D models delighted our partner, and our team continues to look for ways to iterate and improve.

Phones and tablets arranged on an olive surface, each showing a different geologic period of the timeline — Cambrian, Devonian with a Dunkleosteus, Silurian, Permian and Triassic.

Technology

The software we created merges technologies. React was used for front-end development with the user interface. The overall design was built with JavaScript library. Thanks to the AR component, historic creatures feel as though they are right next to you.

To manage which data is displayed to users and how that information is stored and updated, we used Redux. Three.js was employed to render 3D animations and models. This allowed for an engaging display of dynamic graphics. Overall, a responsive website with smooth visualizations and realistic animations was delivered.
